چکیده

PURPOSE To determine whether the promise of high-density many-coil MRI receiver arrays for enabling highly accelerated parallel imaging can be realized in practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 128-channel body receiver-coil array and custom MRI system were developed. The array comprises two clamshells containing 64 coils each, with the posterior array built to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the anterior array design incorporating considerations of weight and flexibility as well. Phantom imaging and human body imaging were performed using a variety of reduction factors and 2D and 3D pulse sequences. RESULTS The ratio of SNR relative to a 32-element array of similar footprint was 1.03 in the center of an elliptical loading phantom and 1.7 on average in the outer regions. Maximum g-factors dropped from 5.5 (for 32 channels) to 2.0 (for 128 channels) for 4x4 acceleration and from 25 to 3.3 for 5x5 acceleration. Residual aliasing artifacts for a right/left (R/L) reduction factor of 8 in human body imaging were significantly reduced relative to the 32-channel array. CONCLUSION MRI with a large number of receiver channels enables significantly higher acceleration factors for parallel imaging and improved SNR, provided losses from the coils and electronics are kept negligible.

Actively Detunable 8-channel Small Animal Transceive Volume Array for 9.4T MRI systems

Introduction Ultra-high field MRI systems for small animals have seen a rapid development over recent years in a continuous effort to enhance SNR and spectral resolution of MRI images. To circumvent the associated high-field B1 inhomogeneity problem, methods such as RF shimming and Transmit SENSE have been proposed [1-2]. To benefit from the advantages of these techniques, dedicated phased-arra...

Assessment of the Characteristics of MRI Coils in Terms of RF Non-Homogeneity Using Routine Spin Echo Sequences

Introduction: One of the major causes of image non-uniformity in MRI is due to the existence of  non-homogeneity in RF receive and transmit. This can be the most effective source of error in  quantitative  studies  in  MRI  imaging.  Part  of  this  non-homogeneity  demonstrates  the  characteristics of RF coil and part of it is due to the interaction of RF field with the material being  imaged...

Development of a Receiver Coil Array for 2D Accelerated Imaging of the Complete Neurovascular System

Introduction Two-dimensional accelerated imaging [1] with acceleration factors as high as R = 8 has been applied successfully in contrastenhanced MR angiography (CE-MRA) of the brain [2, 3] and calves [4]. A key element of this implementation has been the use of multielement receiver coils which are designed for the targeted anatomic region. Multi-element coils for brain MRI are available on co...

Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) based RF-switches in MRI – a performance study

Modern Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems permit parallel, spatial-encoded MRI (pMRI) and as such it is now possible to have up to 128 adjacent coil elements in a coil array [1]. Together with reduced imaging times, pMRI can significantly help to enhance the signal to noise ratio (SNR) over extended fields of view (FOV) [2]. However, a large number of channels subsequently create new tech...

Design and comparison of two eight-channel transmit/receive radiofrequency arrays for in vivo rodent imaging on a 7 T human whole-body MRI system.

PURPOSE Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of rodents can be expected to be a growing application, particularly when translatory imaging research "from mouse to man" is envisioned. 7 T high-field human whole-body MR systems provide a powerful platform for high-resolution small animal imaging. For achieving adequate spatial resolution, dedicated radiofrequency coils have to be designed to provide ...
